Austrian Wine Tasting in Vienna — My Honest Review of the Exclusive Wine Experience

Home » Austria » Austrian Wine Tasting in Vienna — My Honest Review of the Exclusive Wine Experience

I don’t know about you, but whenever I travel, I have to taste the local wine. Even in Japan (yes, Japan!), I found myself at a tiny winery sipping their Merlot—and honestly, it wasn’t bad at all. But that’s a story for another time.

So of course, Austria was no exception. And did you know Austria used to be the third-largest wine-producing country in the world? Today it’s the 17th, but trust me, the quality is higher than ever. With its unique climate, native grape varieties, and centuries-old traditions, Austrian wines are truly unlike anything else.

So how can you actually taste these amazing wines while you’re in Vienna?
That’s where the Exclusive Wine Experience comes in.

Let me give you my honest (and enthusiastic) review — from someone who’s done it several times already.

The Exclusive Wine Experience — Overview

If you’re curious about Austrian wine but don’t know where to start, this experience is perfect.

You book directly on TripAdvisor, choose a date and time, and show up right in the heart of Vienna.

You’ll be greeted by Stylianos, your host — originally from Greece, now a true Viennese at heart. He’s a certified wine geek (WSET3) with a contagious passion for Austrian wines. He makes learning about wine fun, not intimidating, which is honestly rare.

Almost every review mentions how warm and friendly the host is—and how the small group vibe makes it feel like you’ve joined friends around a cellar table rather than signing up for a lecture.

During the tasting, you’ll explore six to eight wines from different regions of Austria, paired with local delicacies like charcuterie and cheese.

My Experience at the Exclusive Wine Experience

I met Stylianos one rainy Thursday afternoon at WeinClub7. Around the table sat a nurse from Las Vegas, a couple from San Francisco, and another pair of travelers from the US. The kind of mix I love — different backgrounds, same curiosity: wine!

We started with a quick visit of the cellar (I’ll let you guess what it used to be — hint: it’s older than you think), and then dove right into tasting.

The Wines

1️⃣ Schloss Gobelsburg Sekt (Kamptal)

A sparkling blend of Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, and Welschriesling — golden yellow, with aromas of brioche, almonds, and baked apple. High acidity, beautiful balance, long finish. The kind of bubbly that reminds you Austria knows what it’s doing.

2️⃣ Sauvignon Blanc from Erwin Sabathi (Südsteiermark)

Think New Zealand vibes but with more finesse. Notes of grass, green apple, and sage. Light-bodied, crisp, and refreshing. A real crowd-pleaser.

3️⃣ Grüner Veltliner Smaragd from Weinhofmeisterei Greif (Wachau)

Pepper, peach, hay, and lemon. Fruity yet spicy. Medium body and acidity — it’s the kind of wine that grows on you sip after sip.

4️⃣ Riesling from Gaisberg (Kamptal)

Intense and precise. Aromas of vanilla, cooked apple, peach, thyme, and white tea. Long finish with just a hint of sweetness — a real lesson in balance.

5️⃣ Zweigelt from Umathum (Burgenland)

Ruby red, with notes of red fruit, eucalyptus, and cured meat. Light tannins, bright acidity — a classic Austrian red, vibrant and full of life.

6️⃣ Zweigelt from Johanneshof (Single Vineyard)

Full-bodied, velvety, and spicy. Black cherry, vanilla, and pepper — a wine that wraps around your palate like a cashmere scarf.

7️⃣ Blaufränkisch from Prieler (Leithaberg)

Dark fruit, vanilla, and structure for days. The tannins still need a few years to soften, but the potential? Huge.

8️⃣ A Greek wine from Naoussa

Because Stylianos likes to finish with a twist. Red and black fruits, leather, eucalyptus, pepper. Bold, elegant, unforgettable.

All this came with a gorgeous plate of local cheese and charcuterie (prosciutto, salami, you name it).

Honestly, it felt so welcoming—one reviewer later summed it up: ‘the best host ever… we felt part of a group of friends’.

Why You Should Book It

This isn’t your typical tourist tasting. It’s intimate, warm, and personal.
You’ll meet people from all over the world, swap travel stories, compare tasting notes, and probably end up laughing over your last glass of Grüner Veltliner.

Every session is different — new wines, new people, new vibes. That’s why I go back every time I’m in Vienna.

And the best part? You’ll leave with actual knowledge, not just a pleasant buzz.

Reviews often note the central location in Vienna and the excellent value for money—especially if you’re new to Austrian wines and just want a relaxed, high-quality tasting.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, I have no negative notes about this experience. It’s worth every euro. Whether you’re a wine beginner or a curious taster, it’s the perfect way to discover Austrian wines in Vienna.

So if you’re planning a trip — or you’re already here — don’t miss it.

And because the wine list changes and the group stays intimate, many go back again—and the reviews reflect that.

You’ll taste, learn, and laugh your way through some of Austria’s best bottles. And who knows — maybe you’ll fall in love with Grüner Veltliner (like I did).

    Mademoiselle,

I am very impressed by your knowledge and expertise regarding Austrian wines. Your article is very informative and your wine repertoire is very impressive. The opportunity to meet people from all over the world who love wine, in and of itself, is something I would look forward to. Vienna sounds like an amazing place to visit and share a fine glass of wine.

This is definitely an offer too good to refuse,

As a wine lover, I love trying different wines in different countries and regions when I am travelling. But I have found that one can sometimes buy a wine that is not to your liking or expectation, which is when a local tasting would be fantastic. So the Exclusive Wine Experience at WeinClub7 (Siebensterngasse) in Vienna sounds like an awesome way to taste Austrian wines.

You mention that the cost of the wine tasting experience is 99 euros, but can one also buy wine at the same time? Or does one need to go elsewhere to buy the wine? Do they deliver worldwide? Thank you.

Hello Line, than you so much for dropping in and your question.

No he doesn’t sell the wines (yet?), but he can definitely recommend places for you to go in Vienna if you want to buy the wines. Most of Austrian wine is drunk locally, it exports a bit to Germany and Switzerland, but that’s it, mostly. So the best way to have good Austrian wine at home is to go and buy it directly in the country.

The brand Wein&Co; has definitely a very nice palette of choice. I would recommend this place.

I hope I answered your question.
