Discover Japanese wine
The part of the wine world you didn’t see coming.
Did you even know Japan makes wine?
And I mean wine from grapes — not sake.
(Many people assume that… I did too at first.)
Most people don’t.
And that’s exactly why this space exists.
Hey you, welcome!
Pull up a chair, grab a glass—let’s talk wine.
If you’ve ever thought, “There must be more than Bordeaux and Burgundy,” you’re my kind of person. Here is where I help you discover Japanese wine — and understand why it deserves a place on your wine map.
Because the wine world is much bigger than the regions we keep talking about — and Japan is one of its biggest blind spots.
Why Japan?
Because it’s one of the biggest blind spots in the wine world.
Most people think they already know the wine map — France, Italy, Spain… maybe a bit of the New World. It feels complete. But Japan isn’t even on it.
And when you mention Japanese wine, the reaction is almost always the same:
“Japan makes wine? Really?”
“Is it actually good?”
“Isn’t it just a curiosity?”
I had the exact same thoughts.
When I first went to Japan, I had no idea they even made wine. And once I found out, it wasn’t easy to explore. It was hard to find, hard to understand, and there was almost no information.
Until one day, after hours of searching, I ended up in a tiny wine bar. The owner didn’t speak English, so we used Google Translate — and he started pouring me glass after glass of Japanese wine.
That was the moment everything changed.
Not because it was flashy or overwhelming, but because there was something there. Something precise, subtle, and different. Something I didn’t expect.
A white like Koshu can remind you of a fresh, lemony Burgundy — just lighter and more delicate. The reds are soft, sometimes a little floral, easy to drink, but still interesting.
And I remember thinking: why did I never hear about this before?
Because that’s the real question.
It’s not that Japanese wine doesn’t exist.
It’s that almost no one is talking about it.
And once you see it, you realize something else: the wine world is much bigger than the few regions we keep coming back to.
That’s why Japan.

- Snow, Grapes, and Grit: Discovering the Hokkaido Wine RegionThe Hokkaido wine region is Japan’s coolest — literally — wine frontier. Located on Japan’s northernmost island, it rivals Nagano as the country’s second-largest wine region and earned its GI status in 2018. Despite brutal winters that force growers to bury their vines under snow each year, Hokkaido produces elegant, high-acid wines from varieties like Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, and Kerner across six distinct subregions. Low humidity, available land, and a collaborative producer community make it one of the most exciting cool-climate wine regions in Asia today.
- Nagano Wine Region : The Future of Japanese WineThe Nagano wine region, located in central Japan, is one of the country’s most important wine-producing areas. Known for its high-altitude vineyards, cool climate, and diverse terroirs, Nagano is divided into five main valleys: Kikyogahara, Chikumagawa, Nihon Alps, Tenryugawa, and Yatsugatake. The region is especially recognized for its Merlot and Chardonnay, which benefit from strong day–night temperature variation and low rainfall. With its collaborative wine culture, modern viticulture, and GI Nagano certification established in 2022, Nagano is widely considered a key region shaping the future of Japanese wine.
- What is Koshu similar to?Kōshū is Japan’s signature white wine, defined by high acidity, low alcohol (10-12%), and a distinctive saline precision. Often compared to Muscadet or Albariño, it offers a delicate profile of yuzu and mineral notes. Whether produced in a crisp “Sur Lie” style or as a structured orange wine, Kōshū is the ultimate companion for oysters and seasonal seafood.
